Planning For Your Future

Planning For Your Future

First, it started with ‘what do you want to do when you grow up,’ then it changed to a year plan, then five years - and now we can plan our whole lives. And while you don’t have to have everything in order, there are a couple of things that you can do to make sure the things that really matter happen.

You might already know you want to have one of the urns that grow a tree or that you want to retire later in life (because you are a workaholic or your circumstances dictate it). And that is great - because when you are planning for your future, those things are going to matter.

Savings

A big one - but if you haven’t got savings yet - today is always the best day to start. The moment you commit to saving little and often, your future does change. And you never know when these savings (no matter how big or small) will make an impact.

It could be that you stashed enough to cover a new tire, a coffee on a really bad day, or something bigger. No matter what you do, savings should be one of them.

Accomplishments

Once upon a time, you maybe wanted to become an astronaut, a football player at the weekend, and a secret billionaire. Let’s say that you didn’t achieve that - but the drive and the excitement behind such ideas never left.

Instead, the things you want to accomplish now are things like writing a book, learning to swim or drive, running a marathon, and finishing the 100 all-time best movie list.

Figure out what makes you happy, and start making the list. Once you start on the list, you’ll get little bumps of dopamine every time you complete one. And a list like this can be with you all the way to the end.

Old Age

In our twenties and thirties, we might joke that we are old, and then out of nowhere, the knee crack and the bad back arrive. Not everyone likes to think about getting old, but if we are lucky, it happens to us all. And when it does, there are some decisions we need to make. Where do we hope to live? What type of care facilities?

Although we hope to get all the way to old age injury-free and pain-free, sometimes there are bumpy roads ahead - what if you had an accident that changed your life? Life care planning means even if you can’t make a decision in the moment, people know what you would’ve wanted.

People

This is a big one, but take some time to look at the people you have around you and decide - are these people who you would want to be trapped on an island with? Would you trust them with your life? Consider the relationships you have.

Are they all healthy and fulfilling? While it isn’t always the best idea to just burn bridges at high speed, you can adjust how you interact, and for those you have around you that you find untrustworthy, then be mindful of them.
