Kabeção Handpan x Pranaforce Yoga

So last week i had a brush with death. Yeah this might be something of a dramatic post, but hey, it's what happened. So as i lay around afterward, kinda happy, kinda sad, kinda shocked, i couldn’t think of much to do other than journal about the things I’ve loved in my life. Those experiences that touched me, the types of situations I’d love to have more of. And one of those things was sitting in the grass on the Pranaforce Yoga land in Maui, looking out at the ocean, playing handpan with Kabeção. 

On this beautiful land in Haiku on the North shore, I learned not just to play an instrument, but to jam with the boys. And even though that sounds silly to some, it meant a lot to me. Because I love to express for sure, but learning scales and drumbeats never felt like my thing. Until I saw Kabeção play. And when I did, I was mesmerized. Never had I seen someone play handpan like that before - so much style, so much character, so much creativity just flowing through him. And so much passion too that it was infectious. It got to the point where my jaw would drop and I’d start giggling as soon as I saw him touch the thing. So much joy.

And to a beginner like me, someone who’d never actually played before, he was gracious. He took just as much time as with the more pro players in our group, to make sure I’s got it. Even on his break time, he’d sit with us practicing to make sure we sounded tight. That’s someone who loves his craft. That’s what it means to play with passion. That’s what makes a true virtuoso. And a super fun experience at that.

And of course there was the land and the people and the food and the laughs and the staying up all night every night to sing and play. And the hikes and the jams and even an open mic night and the instruments and the players from around the world and Yoga and what more can I say? ...I’m so glad I’m still here to join you at the next one.
